OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH
The necessity of medical surveillance
Occupational health is becoming an increasingly complex field.
In a dynamic environment where requirements for occupational health and safety at work are continually evolving, the need for specialist knowledge and understanding of policy, compliance requirements and strategy for effective implementation becomes critical.
At Zanempilo our professional team of occupational health practitioners are able to conduct the required health evaluations and other ad hoc medical surveillance services, at our clinic or on-site with our mobile unit.
This will be done in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Compensation of Injuries and Disease Act and associated regulations as well as the Mine Health and Safety Act.

WHY IS SCREENING NECESSARY?
Medical surveillance (screening) is required by law to be carried out in workplaces where workers are exposed to particular hazards and risks.
The particular hazards that require medical surveillance include noise, certain chemicals, certain biological agents, lead and asbestos. Risks include, people working on heights, machine operators, forklift drivers, etc.
If an employee contracts an occupational disease or disability due to the work environment and medical surveillance was not conducted, the employer could be held responsible for any claims from the employee.
If the medical surveillance programme was done, claims can be made to the Compensation Commissioner.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MEDICAL SURVEILLANCE?
Medical surveillance or health screening focuses on the early detection and treatment of diseases associated with particular occupations.
Workplace health surveillance deals with the removal of factors that could lead to illness or injury.
The medical surveillance programme will also determine whether employees are fit for duty by using the criteria, as set out on a man job specification supplied to us by the employer.
The surveillance programme offers entry/pre-employment, periodical and exit medical examinations.

No matter the size or type of the business, procedures for safety in the workplace are a necessity for all staff.
Safety measures protect employees as well as equipment and business property.
Avoiding or minimising injuries to employees and damage to equipment and facilities will result in fewer expenses and more profit for a business.
All business are required to be compliant with the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993 (Act 85 of 1993).
The purpose of the Act is to provide for the health and safety of persons at work or in connection with the use of plant and machinery.
It further provides for the protection of persons other than persons at work from hazards arising out of or in connection with the activities of persons at work.
